Teen/Parent Driving Contract
Back in the day when I was a teen, when I was driving with my parents in the car, I drove like an angel. When I was alone or with my friends, I drove like a bat out of hell!
When I was 16, I was training to be a baseball umpire. I had an old Chevy S-10 pickup (I loved that truck!). I would drive thirty minutes away, two nights each week, to go to the umpire classes. The thirty minute drive was a straight shot down a busy road with lots of traffic and intersections with traffic lights. I would try to weave in and out of traffic and hit the lights just right so that I could shave off a minute or two. I would rock out to the only tape that was in my truck and I don’t even know how it got there. It was Tom Petty. I would rewind the tape over and over to listen to my two favorite songs, “Free Fallin” and “American Girl.”
I loved driving when I was a teen and I still do. Driving is freedom and freedom feels good!
These days, as an insurance agent, I hear about every crazy story on the road that you can ever imagine. I get phone calls at all hours of the day and night of people in precarious situations on the side of the freeway, in parking lots, all over the place. I am very aware of what happens on the roads. I could write a book about all of the things that our clients have done…or things that have happened to our clients on the road.
So far this year, there have been approximately 23 car crashes that involve teens EVERY SINGLE DAY. These are not just fender benders. The number of fatal crashes involving teens is up 60% this year.
We need to be honest with ourselves. We need to be…..humble. We need to admit that we need to be better. We need to be self-aware of things that we really do need to change. (Isn’t that hard, though!)
We all need to drive safer, but this is National Teen Driver Safety Week, so let’s focus on the teens.
I want to introduce you to the Teen/Parent Driving Contract.
I love this Teen/Parent driving contract. It EDUCATES the teen and the parent. I shows them the main risks while driving. It shows statistics. It also gives ACCOUNTABILITY to the teens and to the parents. If the teen does certain things, then the parent will do certain things.
I will make you a deal. If you actually do this contract with your teen driver, I will send you and your teen a $10 Amazon gift card. This is Jared, the owner of Ullrich Insurance. You can find my contact information on our website. Reach out to me and let me know if you are doing this!
